Danielle De Jesus, a native of Brooklyn’s Bushwick, looks to her immediate surroundings as a source of inspiration for her art practices. Her formal studies began at The Fashion Institute of Technology, focusing in photography.  While a student in 2007, she took on an ongoing extensive photography project, documenting the rapid gentrification of her home neighborhood of Bushwick.  Since then, Danielle has returned to her first passion, painting and drawing.  Her current work employs non-traditional practices, media, and tools in the service of portraying the meaningful people and current events that influence her.  Portraits and events are often documented on unexpected surfaces such as Etch A Sketch screens, brick walls, paper currency, and even pumpkins.  In early 2016, influenced by the popular Broadway hit musical Hamilton, she immortalized creator/writer Lin Manuel Miranda’s likeness on a $10 bill.  This act led Danielle to her current body of work, a series of pop culture icons and influential people of color on U.S currency.
